Soft Drinks and Fertility

The Impact of Weight on Fertility

Omega-3 May Boost Male Fertility

You’ve likely already heard that omega-3 fatty acids are important for maintaining heart health and good cholesterol levels. But did you also know that they can boost male fertility? Recent studies have shown that men who struggle with infertility tend to have lower levels of omega-3. Researchers have found that increasing the amount of omega-3 in your diet can result in stronger, higher-quality sperm. For men looking to improve their fertility, increasing their omega-3 level can be one step towards a solution.

How Does Omega-3 Improve Fertility?

There are two particularly important kinds of omega-3 fatty acids: docosahexnoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), both of which are found in fish sources. DHA is the one that has a positive effect on male fertility. A study at the University of Illinois found that DHA plays a central role in sperm formation. Healthy sperm have a pointed structure at the top called an acrosome. This structure functions much like a sharp hat, enabling the sperm to pierce through the egg’s outer layers. The acrosome also contains a collection of enzymes that helps the sperm to fertilize the egg. DHA is essential to building these acrosomes. Without DHA, sperm remain round at the top and lack those crucial enzymes. For this reason, not getting enough omega-3 can result in weaker sperm. And that will have a harder time fertilizing the egg.

 How Can You Get More Omega-3?

Omega-3 fatty acids are naturally found in oily fish, including salmon, sardines, anchovies, bluefish, herring, tuna, and mackerel. You can boost your level of omega-3 by eating these 2-3 times a week. Because omega-3s are so good for you, you’ll benefit your health in other ways, too. If you don’t love fish, you can get up your omega-3 intake by taking a supplement. Either a direct fish oil supplement or a pill derived from fish. If you’re shopping for supplements, you’ll likely see omega-3 supplements made from plant sources such as flaxseed oil, walnuts, soybean oil, and canola oil. How to Exercise to Increase Your Fertility

When you’re trying to conceive, there are so many details that affect your body, and therefore your fertility. How much you exercise can be one of those things. Regular, light exercise can help to keep your body healthy and support reproductive functions. Too much intense exercise, on the other hand, can actually decrease fertility and may increase the risk of ovulation disorders. The key is to find balance; moderate exercise to maintain a healthy weight and keep your body baby-ready.

Finding the Right Weight

Being either overweight or underweight can negatively affect your fertility. Ideally, you want to be between a BMI of 18.5 and 24.9, or a body fat percentage between 12% and 30%. Being either under or above a healthy weight can disrupt your body’s hormone production and ovulation, making it harder to conceive. If you are unsure whether you are in a healthy range, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor. Then you can adjust your diet and exercise to reach a healthy weight that will be good for both conceiving and supporting a baby.

Exercising to Make a Healthy Body

Moderate exercise can improve your fertility in a handful of ways. It improves your blood flow, which is essential for reproduction, and improves your muscle mass, which in turn helps to support your reproductive organs. Exercise also improves your strength and stamina, which will help you through a healthy and comfortable pregnancy. How Different Contraceptives Affect Fertility

Understanding your different options for contraceptives and their effects on fertility are important for successful family planning. If you plan to start a family in the future, you should choose a birth control method that lines up with your time table. While some contraceptives have no lasting effect on fertility, some have effects that last for a year or more. It’s important to consider these effects when deciding which contraceptive option is right for you.

Condoms and Diaphragms

Condoms and diaphragms, also referred to a barrier contraceptives, only take effect when they are in use. They have no long-term effect on male or female fertility, so as soon as you stop using them, there’s no barrier to conception.

Birth Control Pills

Many women and their partners worry that using oral birth control for a long time will negatively affect their fertility. Most studies, however, have found that birth control pills do not have an effect on long-term fertility. A 2010 study by the BU School of Public Health, found that “Women who have used [oral contraceptives] for four years or more should be reassured because we found no evidence that long-term OC use deleteriously affects fecundability.” Oral birth control does, however, affect short-term fertility. If you are trying to conceive, you will need to plan on your body taking time to adjust after you stop taking birth control. Contraceptive pills contain estrogen and progesterone, hormones that also occur naturally in the body, which prevent normal ovulation. Normal ovulation cycles should restart as soon as one month after you start taking the pill, although for some women it can take between three months and a year.

IUDs

Intrauterine devices work by releasing a substance (either copper or a hormone called progestin) that prevents sperm from fertilizing an egg. Since IUDs don’t directly affect ovulation, women’s cycles typically return to normal within about a month. It usually takes a little longer for women to become pregnant; IUDs are thought to affect fertility for slightly longer than oral contraceptives. On average, it takes women about 11 months to become pregnant after having an IUD removed. Researchers do not believe there is any long-term effect on fertility.

Depo-Provera

Depo-Provera is a hormonal contraceptive that works much like birth control pills, except that the hormones are taken as an injection every three months. Because the hormones are injected into the muscles, they linger in your body and have long-lasting effects on fertility. Typically, the time it takes to return to default fertility is between 10 months and a year and a half. However, you may become pregnant as soon as three months after using Depo-Provera regularly. Because the injections take a long time to stop having an effect, you should not choose this method of contraceptive if you hope to get pregnant soon.

The Effects of Tight Underwear on Male Fertility

You’ve probably heard before that tight underwear or pants can harm male fertility. Research so far has produced mixed results, but there is some evidence that suggests wearing tight garments lowers sperm production and therefore making it harder to conceive. If you’re trying to have a baby, you may want to pay attention to this information and adjust your wardrobe accordingly.

As a matter of fact, overly tight clothing can cause a number of health issues for both men and women. Tight pants, in particular, can lead to urinary tract infections, over-active bladders, and even twisted testicles. When it comes to sperm however, the problem isn’t the constriction that tight garments cause; it’s the heat.

The testicles function best when they are slightly cooler than body temperature. That’s why they hang outside of the body. Tight underwear or pants push the testicles up against the body, subsequently increasing their temperature. This increased temperature causes reductions in sperm count and can also decrease sperm motility.

A number of studies have supported this theory that tight garments increase testicular temperatures. A 2007 study, for example, confirmed that tighter-fitting underwear were associated with higher temperatures in the scrotum. How strictly this temperature rise corresponds to sperm count, however, is still a matter of debate. We know that the testicles should be kept slightly cooler than body temperature for ideal sperm production, and we also know that tight underwear and pants can increase testicular temperature. The remaining question is whether the temperature increase is enough to make a significant difference. Most studies conducted so far have been small, and more research is still necessary to reach a convincing conclusion.

If you are trying to conceive, however, you may want to take the cautious route by choosing looser-fitting garments. Briefs (or “tightie wighties”), skinny jeans, and other tight pants can all constrict the testicles and lead to temperature increases. If you are having trouble conceiving, choose boxers and looser-fitting pants instead. This is particularly important when you are participating in sports activities or sitting for long stretches, as these activities raise your scrotum’s temperature.

Keep in mind that sperm production takes about 10-11 weeks. The good news is that this means if you habitually wore skinny jeans in your youth, they shouldn’t have a long-term effect on your fertility. However, you also need to plan in advance and adjust your wardrobe for the long-term. You can’t simply wear baggier pants on the nights you are trying to conceive. Instead, view this wardrobe change as a long-term lifestyle adjustment until you and your partner conceive.
