10 Early Signs of Pregnancy

Even before a pregnancy test will come back positive, your body can give you some subtle signs that you’re pregnant. You may notice these in the first few weeks of your pregnancy, and even as early as a few days after you conceived. Of course, these symptoms vary for everyone. Some women may not have any, and others may misinterpret the signs. But if you’re looking to tell whether you’re pregnant as soon as possible, these common signs may be your first clues.

1. Tender breasts

Breasts can become tender from all the extra estrogen your body is producing.

2. Aversion to certain smells and foods

If the smell of coffee makes you gag, or if you suddenly can’t stand the thought of a favorite food, you may be in the early stages of pregnancy.

3. Mood swings

Pregnancy wreaks havoc with your hormones, which often induces mood swings. You may find yourself feeling weepy, angry, or elated for minimal reasons.

4. Shortness of breath

Do you feel winded after a walk, flight of stairs, or jog that would usually be no problem? A growing baby uses up some of your oxygen.

5. Fatigue

Tiredness is very common in the first trimester of pregnancy – another side effect of your elevated hormone levels.

6. Needing to pee all the time

Diabetes and Infertility

Diabetes can affect male fertility in a number of ways. One of the most common is by lowering testosterone levels. This will lower your sex drive and can cause erectile dysfunction. Diabetes can also affect your ability to maintain an erection by reducing blood circulation or by causing nerve damage. Some men with diabetes also face challenges to ejaculation. Nerve problems can prevent the bladder muscles from closing as they are supposed to. It can result in semen entering the bladder instead of the penis. This is called retrograde ejaculation. The Best Sex Positions to Conceive

It’s a long-standing debate: can your sex position make a difference in how likely you are to conceive? The bottom line is that it’s possible to get pregnant in any position.

Sperm can travel into the fallopian tubes from any angle, even when the woman is on top. Some studies, however, have found that a couple of positions can help to maximize the amount of sperm that enter through the cervix.

Missionary Position

Missionary is the tried-and- true standard for trying to conceive. The position enables deep penetration, and the woman being on her back tilts the vagina down towards the cervix. This can make it easier for sperm to enter the uterus.

Doggy Style

Doggy style is an ideal position for deep penetration, placing sperm as close as possible to the cervix. Other positions in which the man enters from behind, such as spooning or the woman laying on her stomach, also allow this kind of penetration.

Positions to Avoid

The goal in choosing a sex position is to maximize the amount of sperm that can enter the uterus. Let gravity work for you by avoiding sex standing up, sitting, or with the woman on top. These positions can definitely still result in a pregnancy, but they may reduce the number of sperm that make it to the finish line.

A Caveat

While missionary and doggy style may be the best positions for maximizing sperm entry, there are other factors to consider. Regardless of position, it’s most important that you have sex regularly, particularly leading up to ovulation. You should make sure that you and your partner are having fun and feeling relaxed as much as possible. If changing up your positions helps with that, it’s worthwhile, even if that means trying out something that’s not on this list.

What You Need to Know about Ovulation When Trying to Conceive

When trying to conceive, your first step to success should be to get in sync with your ovulation cycle. Understanding how ovulation works will help you plan your path to pregnancy and conceive sooner. We’ve prepared some important facts about ovulation to help you on your way sooner.

How does ovulation work?

Each month, your ovaries release a single egg. The process starts with the production of estrogen and other hormones, which stimulate your ovaries’ follicles and get your body ready for ovulation. At the peak of your cycle, usually 12-18 days after your period finishes, your ovaries release an egg. The egg descends through the fallopian tubes and settles in your uterus. It will stay there for about 12-24 hours, which is your window for fertilization. If the egg isn’t fertilized in that period, your uterus will shed its lining, along with the egg.

When can I get pregnant?

It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly when your body is ovulating, so you usually won’t be able to pick a specific day for conception. Keep in mind that you’ll usually be ovulating 12-18 days after the end of your period. If you have a very regular menstrual cycle, it will be easier to predict when you’re ovulating. Sperm can survive inside the body for up to 7 days, so women are the most fertile in the week leading up to ovulation. For the best chance of conception, you should have sex regularly starting around the 10th or 11th day of your cycle and continuing through the 18th. It’s possible, but less likely, to get pregnant outside of this window.

Are there ways to tell when I’m ovulating?

The most tried-and-true method of figuring out whether you’re ovulating is by checking your body temperature. Your temperature increases slightly (usually by just 0.5-1 degrees) when you have just ovulated. To use this method, you’ll need to start tracking your temperature over time. Make sure that you measure it at the same time each day, ideally in the morning when you’ve just woken up. Gradually, you’ll be able to see your body’s pattern and more accurately predict when you’ll be ovulating. You can also try an ovulation predictor kit, which measures hormones in your urine to predict when ovulation is about to start. These tools can be a big help in determining when is the best time to conceive.

The Impact of Weight on Fertility

Being at a healthy weight is important for so many reasons, one of which is fertility. If you’re trying to conceive and you or your partner is over or underweight, it may be harder to conceive. Before you start trying to conceive, it’s a good idea to consult your doctor about your general health and, if necessary, work on a plan to reach and maintain a healthy weight.

Being overweight and its effect on fertility

Being overweight (having a BMI of 25 or more) can interfere with a woman’s fertility by affecting her body’s production of hormones. Having more fat results in producing more estrogen, which in term can interfere with ovulation. In addition, obesity has been linked to a couple of fertility-related problems, including endocrine disorder and poly-cystic ovary syndrome. In total, women who are obese have a significantly harder time conceiving, and being overweight can also undermine fertility. For men, being overweight can reduce testosterone levels and result in lower sperm quality.

Being underweight and its effect on fertility

Being underweight (having a BMI under 18.5) can also be a problem for fertility. Like being overweight, being underweight can lead to imbalanced hormone production. Women who are underweight are also frequently not getting sufficient nutrients. This can lead to irregular ovulation or even stop ovulation from happening altogether. When underweight women do become pregnant, a lack of nutrients can cause risks for their pregnancies. Being underweight is also a problem for men. It often leads to a low sperm count, which makes fertilization more difficult.

For both men and women, therefore, it’s important to work towards a healthy weight before trying to conceive. This will not only help you to get pregnant, it will help you to have a healthy pregnancy and live long, healthy lives while raising a family.

Average Time to Get Pregnant

If you’re trying to conceive, there’s probably one top question on your mind: how long will it take to get pregnant? Unfortunately, there’s no one set answer, as it can vary depending on your health, age, reproductive health, and how often you’re having sex. Many couples can expect to conceive within a year, but that’s not the case for everyone. Below, we break down the statistics and discuss when you should consider fertility tests.

How Long Does It Take to Get Pregnant?

This number varies, so it’s important not to compare yourself to other couples and expect the same results. A 2002 study done in the journal Human Reproduction studied 346 women who were trying to get pregnant over one year. 38% of the women got pregnant within 1 month, 68% within 3 months, 81% within 6 months, and 92% within 12 months. The remaining 8% did not conceive during the first year. Some couples can take up to 2 or 3 years to conceive.

What Can Make Conception Take Longer?

A number of factors can affect your fertility. Age is one of the biggest of these. For women, fertility can begin to drop beginning in their 30s. For men, fertility typically doesn’t decline until about 50. Lifestyle factors can also make conception more or less likely. Smoking, excessive drinking, and high levels of caffeine can all inhibit fertility. Being unhealthy or significantly overweight can also make conceiving harder. In addition, many women trying to conceive are coming off of birth control. It typically takes a full cycle (or about a month) for your body to return to normal and baby-readiness after you stop taking birth control.

When Should You See a Fertility Specialist?

Before you start trying to conceive, you should visit your doctor for a general checkup and inform them that you are trying to get pregnant. They can make sure that you are healthy and that your body is ready for a baby. However, most couples do not have any fertility tests performed when they start trying to conceive. Typically, you can wait until you’ve been trying for a year. Then, the two of you may want to visit a fertility specialist to see whether you have any fertility problems. If you do, you may want to pursue treatment options to help you have a baby. If you are trying to conceive at 35 or older, you should visit a fertility specialist if you haven’t conceived within 6 months. This ensures that you don’t waste any of your precious time.

Omega-3 May Boost Male Fertility

You’ve likely already heard that omega-3 fatty acids are important for maintaining heart health and good cholesterol levels. But did you also know that they can boost male fertility? Recent studies have shown that men who struggle with infertility tend to have lower levels of omega-3. Researchers have found that increasing the amount of omega-3 in your diet can result in stronger, higher-quality sperm. For men looking to improve their fertility, increasing their omega-3 level can be one step towards a solution.

How Does Omega-3 Improve Fertility?

There are two particularly important kinds of omega-3 fatty acids: docosahexnoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), both of which are found in fish sources. DHA is the one that has a positive effect on male fertility. A study at the University of Illinois found that DHA plays a central role in sperm formation. Healthy sperm have a pointed structure at the top called an acrosome. This structure functions much like a sharp hat, enabling the sperm to pierce through the egg’s outer layers. The acrosome also contains a collection of enzymes that helps the sperm to fertilize the egg. DHA is essential to building these acrosomes. Without DHA, sperm remain round at the top and lack those crucial enzymes. For this reason, not getting enough omega-3 can result in weaker sperm. And that will have a harder time fertilizing the egg.

 How Can You Get More Omega-3?

Omega-3 fatty acids are naturally found in oily fish, including salmon, sardines, anchovies, bluefish, herring, tuna, and mackerel. You can boost your level of omega-3 by eating these 2-3 times a week. Because omega-3s are so good for you, you’ll benefit your health in other ways, too. If you don’t love fish, you can get up your omega-3 intake by taking a supplement. Either a direct fish oil supplement or a pill derived from fish. If you’re shopping for supplements, you’ll likely see omega-3 supplements made from plant sources such as flaxseed oil, walnuts, soybean oil, and canola oil. Unfortunately, these plant sources are not a good source of DHA, the specific kind of omega-3 needed to build strong sperm.

Part of a Larger Strategy

Keep in mind that omega-3 is not a magic cure to infertility. Unless you have undergone a blood test that shows low levels of omega-3, it’s hard to know if that’s what’s solving the problem. Taking an omega-3 supplement is a good way to improve your chances of strong, fertile sperm. However, this supplementation works best when performed alongside other fertility-friendly steps. For example – maintaining a healthy weight, eating healthily, exercising, avoiding smoking and heavy drinking, wearing loose undergarments, and consulting with your doctor. By taking a well-rounded approach, you can be confident that you’re doing everything in your power to improve your odds of conception.

The Link between Vitamin D and Pregnancy

Vitamin D plays an essential role in the body, enabling you to absorb calcium, and it has been linked to a healthier immune system and a lower risk of some kinds of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other health problems.

For these reasons, vitamin D is essential for staying healthy, yet many people (approximately half of the U.S. population) are deficient in vitamin D. This problem becomes even more acute for pregnant women because the fetus depends completely upon the mother as its source of vitamin D. Research suggests that vitamin D deficiency may be linked to problems during pregnancy and with the health of your baby. This makes it extremely important to get enough vitamin D during pregnancy.

Why Vitamin D Deficiency is Common

Vitamin D is available through some foods and through exposure to sunlight. You might think that it would be easy to get vitamin D regularly as long as you spend time outdoors. But a number of factors make it more difficult for your body to absorb the vitamin. Covering your skin or wearing sunscreen can prevent your skin from absorbing sunlight. In addition, people with darker skin or obesity may produce vitamin D less quickly. As an alternative to sunlight, you can take in vitamin D through food. The best sources of the vitamin are egg yolks and oily fish such as tuna, salmon, and sardines. Many people do not eat much of these foods, although they may get vitamin D through fortified dairy products. If you don’t regularly drink or eat foods fortified with vitamin D, however, you are likely not producing quite enough.

 The Risks of Vitamin D Deficiency during Pregnancy

Vitamin D is essential to a fetus’s bone development. Pregnant mothers with vitamin D deficiencies may have an increased risk of rickets, bone fractures, and abnormal bone growth in their babies. Vitamin D deficiency may also increase the risk of preterm births, preeclampsia, and infections in newborns.

How to Get Vitamin D

You can increase your vitamin D levels naturally by eating foods that contain high levels of the vitamin and by getting regular sun exposure. The easiest way to get more vitamin D, however, is by taking a supplement. Researchers are still studying the ideal level of Vitamin D, but most recommend between 600 and 2000 IU (international units). You’ll get some vitamin D through a prenatal vitamin, but most only contain 400 IU. You can get from that to the recommended dosage by taking a vitamin D supplement. When choosing a supplement, cholecalciferol is the strongest form, but you’ll need to look for ergocalciferol if you’re a vegan; cholecalciferol is derived from animal products. If you want to find out if you have a vitamin D deficiency or are unsure of which supplement you should take, it’s a good idea to consult with your doctor.
