Your Odds of Conceiving at Every Point in Your Cycle

When you’re trying to conceive, it’s important to know when you are most likely to get pregnant. Keep in mind is that you can only get pregnant in the 5 days before and 1 day after ovulation. That is why it’s essential to be familiar with your cycle. Below, we break down the different stages of the menstrual cycle and when conception is possible.

During your period

For most women, ovulation starts about two weeks before the start of your period. This means that your period is generally too far ahead of ovulation to make conception from sex during your menstrual cycle possible.

Pre-ovulation

Conception is possible in the pre-ovulation phase. This is because sperm can live for up to 5 days within cervical mucus. If you’re trying to conceive, you should have sex frequently (aim for every other day) in the week leading up to your ovulation. This usually starts at about day seven of your cycle.

Ovulation

Ovulation is the prime time for conception, which is why it’s important to track your cycles using an ovulation kit, monitoring your vaginal discharge, or tracking your temperature. Your body temperature will go up by about half a degree when you’re ovulating, which is a good indicator that it’s time to work on making a baby! Once you’ve been tracking your cycle, you should be able to predict fairly accurately when you’ll be ovulating. The 24-hour window around ovulation is the best time to conceive.

Post-ovulation

Eggs only survive for about 12 hours, so you may still be able to get pregnant in the day following ovulation. After that, your chances of conceiving are very low until your next cycle.

Pregnancy after Having Your Tubes Tied?

If you’ve had your tubes tied (otherwise known as tubal litigation) or are considering the procedure, you may be wondering if there is any chance of still getting pregnant. Overall, tubal litigation is a highly effective means of contraception. However, there is still a chance of pregnancy.

Chance of Natural Pregnancy

Tubal litigation is about 99.9% effective, which means that a small number of women who have had the procedure still get pregnant naturally. Occasionally, as the fallopian tubes heal, a small opening called a fistula can remain. This opening can allow sperm to reach and fertilize an egg. Unfortunately, women who conceive after having their tubes tied have a high chance of ectopic pregnancy. This is because the egg can become blocked in the partially healed tube. If you have had your tubes tied but begin to experience signs of pregnancy (such as missing your period), you should talk with your doctor as soon as possible.

In Vitro Fertilization

For many women who have had their tubes tied, in vitro fertilization (IVF) represents the best chance of getting pregnant. Unlike other methods of artificial insemination, IVF bypasses the fallopian tubes.

Nutrition and fertility articles are full of suggestions for foods that may help you to stay healthy and fertile when trying to conceive. But it’s important to know which foods to avoid, too. Watch out for these x foods.

High-mercury fish

Fish can be a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, but certain kinds are high in mercury, which can build up in your body and be harmful to your baby. Avoid swordfish, shark, and mackerel.

Alcohol

No one’s saying you can’t enjoy a glass of wine or a beer while trying to conceive (and it may help you relax from the stress), but avoid drinking to excess. Binge drinking can lead to irregular menstrual cycles and hormonal imbalances.

Coffee

Apply the same rule of moderation to caffeine: one or two cups of coffee or tea ( around 200 milligrams of caffeine) a day is perfectly fine, but more than that can impair your fertility.  eavy caffeine consumption has been associated with fertility problems.

Certain dairy products

Certain dairy products may contain a kind of bacteria called listeria, which is linked with a higher risk of miscarriage. To prevent this risk, avoid soft cheeses like goat’s cheese and brie, blue-veined cheeses like Stilton, and pate. Listeria can also be present in deli and smoked meats, so it’s a good rule to avoid those as well.

Soy

High consumption of soy has been linked to lower fertility. You don’t have to cut out the occasional serving of edamame or soy milk in your coffee, but keep soy levels down. This may be tricky for vegetarians who love tofu and other soy products. Try looking for other veggie sources of protein, like beans.

Raw meat, fish, unpasteurized cheeses and eggs

Put down the raw cookie dough! Raw meat and eggs exposes you to a risk of salmonella, listeria, or other food-borne bacteria, which in turn increases your risk of miscarriage.

When to Have a Second Child

When to Have a Second Child

If you want to grow your family, it can be hard to plan exactly when to have a second child. There are pros and cons to both small and large age gaps between siblings. When you’re planning a second pregnancy, you should think about your parenting style and what kind of relationship you want your kids to have. Of course, sometimes life makes its own plans, so know that no matter how much you plan things out, you may not end up with exactly the timing you want.

Under 2 Years

Some parents decide to get pregnant and have a second baby right after the first. The benefits are that their kids grow up at a very similar age and will therefore go through similar phases and interests together. Siblings close in age can grow up to be extremely close. On the flip side, they can also have more intense sibling rivalry. Practically speaking, having a second kid within two years will mean parenting a toddler while pregnant and while you have a new baby, which can be a big challenge.

2-4 Years

Many parenting experts recommend this age gap: parents have a chance to develop a stable (or at least somewhat stable) routine with their first child and even catch up on some sleep before having a new baby. Your first child may even be starting preschool, giving you some one-on-one time with the baby. The downsides are that you have to start the whole bottles and diapers routine from square one, just when you feel like you’ve finished it. A 2-4 age gap is small enough that your two kids will grow up together, although you may have to deal with feelings of jealousy in the older sibling.

5+ Years

Many parents opt for a longer gap between children either because that’s what works best with career and other life plans, or because they want to be able to really focus on each child’s youngest years. A larger gap allows you to maximize individual attention, and your older kids may even be able to help out with the youngest. The downsides are that it may be harder for your kids to bond as you grow up, and you’ll have to bounce back in forth between a baby and older child.

A group of studies has found that female smokers are 60% more likely than nonsmokers to be infertile. They are also 42% more likely to have conception take more than a year. This is because smoking accelerates ovarian death, which means depleting your supply of eggs and leaving your existing eggs more fragile. Female smokers generally go through menopause 1-4 years earlier than nonsmokers for this reason.

Smoking and male fertility

Smoking also affects sperm at the most basic level: sperm’s DNA. Chemicals from smoking circulate through your body and can bind with the sperm’s DNA, decreasing sperm motility. Smoking has also been linked to lower sperm counts and erectile dysfunction. All of these make fertilization and conception more difficult.

Quitting and its benefits for fertility

The good news is that quitting can help your chances of conceiving quite quickly. Your natural fertility is likely to improve within two months of quitting, and the negative effects may be reversed within a year. For women, quitting smoking before conceiving also ensures a healthier pregnancy. It’s important to note that second-hand smoke has similar negative effects on fertility. So if both members of a couple smoke, it’s important for both of them to quit. And if you live in a household with other smokers, you may want to consider moving or make arrangements to minimize exposure to second-hand smoke.

How Heat May Affect Male Infertility

You’ve probably heard that wearing tight underwear can be bad for your fertility. The fact is that heat has a negative impact on male fertility, so the advice to avoid tighty whities is essentially right. High temperatures have an effect on sperm health, specifically sperm motility (movement), which makes it harder for sperm to fertilize an egg. This is why the testicles are located away from the body; sperm should be about 4 degrees cooler than the average body temperature.

Avoid common sources of heat

If you are trying to conceive, it’s a good idea to avoid the most common sources of undue heat. First of all, make sure that your underwear and pants are not tight fitting. Looser clothing provides your testicles space to self-regulate their temperature. It’s also a good idea to limit time in hot tubs, saunas, or baths. If you are outdoors in the hot weather, do your best to take frequent breaks to cool down. The same applies to sitting. Make sure to get up, stretch, and move around often. If you are overweight, excess fat in the scrotum area may also negatively impact your fertility. Losing weight can help you to keep your body temperature at a healthy level.

Plan ahead

Sperm take about 70 days, or more than 3 months, to mature. This means that if you are often exposed to sources of heat, or if you have recently been sick with a high fever, it will take a while for your sperm to recover to full motility. If you are trying to conceive, try to plan ahead and start avoiding sources of heat early. This will help you and your partner in your efforts to conceive.
